City of San Diego Increases Support for San Diego Startup Week 2020

Startup San Diego is proud to announce that the City of San Diego will again be helping to fund San Diego Startup Week (SDSW) next year, increasing its funding from $35,000 to $50,000 for SDSW 2020 and ensuring the early-stage planning of our signature annual event.

This timing is perfect. We just finished SDSW 2019, which was perhaps the world’s first binational Startup Week, with events at the San Diego Convention Center as well as Tijuana and Carlsbad. Now we are already locking in dates for SDSW 2020 at the Convention Center.

SDSW is only possible because of our amazing volunteers, sponsors, and community partners. Thanks to their collective support, San Diego enjoys access to high-quality, low-cost programming that celebrates and connects the local startup ecosystem.

San Diego Startup Week celebrates and reminds us of the essential role San Diego’s startups play in the continued positive growth of our innovation ecosystem.  San Diego’s startups are changing the very nature of our economy, opening up opportunity for all our residents, and are literally changing the world for the better in the process.  Startup San Diego has become a critical component of the early-stage economic ecosystem which allows startups to thrive here. That’s why the City of San Diego is so excited to support your work.

— Erik Caldwell, Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Smart and Sustainable Communities Branch

Innovation that leads to new ideas and continuous invention is San Diego’s economic success story. We continue to define and redefine what it means to be an entrepreneur by pushing the boundaries of “no” that lead to a path of “yes”.  Startup San Diego has embraced the challenge to develop a key support system that many entrepreneurs need for any burgeoning businesses to flourish. The City of San Diego’s Economic Development team is thrilled to partner with Startup San Diego on San Diego’s Startup Week and look toward many more years of continued growth and success.”

— Christina Bibler, Director, Economic Development, City of San Diego

As a grassroots nonprofit, Startup San Diego’s mission is to help entrepreneurs get started, empowering every member of their team while elevating the City’s startup ecosystem and brand as a premier innovation hub.

If you look at San Diego’s history, ideas born here over the last 50 years changed the world; we believe the City’s investment in this generation of entrepreneurs will pay dividends for generations to come.

Inclusive economies empower aspiring entrepreneurs to create diverse solutions. Society has challenges on the horizon. Let’s move fast and fix things together. It’s a shared effort. We are thrilled to be in service to you, our region’s entrepreneurs, innovators, and all San Diegans.

We are committed to continually making SDSW a shared platform for and by the entire community, and already have ideas about how to improve the platform in 2020. Stay tuned!
